Lighting
Good lighting requires collaboration. Lighting is never the only part of a project, but is always a very important part, and is frequently overlooked. In developing appropriate lighting plans I start with these considerations:
- The architecture always informs my ideas.
- How a space will be used (tasks and activities) and the clients desires are significant.
- Products and placement are crucial.
- Budget plays a role.
Ultimately, melding these considerations provides the balance.
My creativity, wisdom and experience enhance my work on any size lighting project; from the simple to the most complex. My strengths are:
- Understanding the wide variety of available lighting products and lighting controls, including new and emerging products, when to use them, why to use them and what their costs might be.
- Effective collaboration with all the parties involved in building and renovation, and working in all design styles.
- Providing wise and efficient advice.
- Sharing excellent resources for all aspects of a project, including manufacturing of custom fixtures.
- Up-to-date knowledge about energy efficient lighting, the use of these products, ‘green’ lighting and the inherent pros and cons.
- Seeing a project to completion. In lighting this is meaningful, because it’s the finishing touches that make the lighting truly effective and special.
Who uses a lighting designer?
- Architects who appreciate having a specialist advise them on products, layout, design, or need to find solutions to lighting unique or difficult spaces.
- Contractors who want their clients to end up with effective and beautiful lighting in the projects they build.
- Electricians who understand that having a good lighting plan extends beyond pulling the wires, and requires lots of product experience, which they often don’t have.
- Interior designers who want help accenting and developing the environments they are creating.
- Home and business owners who are looking for sound advice and great value while building out their project.
